AGENCY OVERVIEW:
MISSION:
To develop the agricultural sector to ensure increased production of quality food and other commodities through environmentally sustainable management practices, for the benefit of the entire population.

SCOPE:
The Ministry manages eight programme areas:

 STRATEGIES:
 
To facilitate increased trade in agricultural produce;
  To create mechanisms for easier and greater access to capital forinvestment;
  To ensure food security through the optimal utilization of the factors of production;
  To  strengthen and streamline extension service delivery;
  To  develop the human capacity for effective and efficient development of the agricultural
     sector;
  To  generate, transfer and facilitate the adoption of appropriate technologies  for the
     production of traditional and non-traditional agricultural commodities;
  To  develop the regulatory framework that will facilitate increased food  safety;
  To  promote the development of community groups to undertake sustainable  management of the
       natural resources;
  To establish appropriate mechanisms to assist in the  mitigation of negative impacts on the
       marine and terrestrial environment;
  To develop the nation’s natural resource base, while  protecting terrestrial and marine
     biological diversity.

 KEY RESULTS:
  Increase (>10%) in the production of non-traditional agricultural commodities;
  Preservation of market share in traditional agricultural commodities; 
  Reduction (>5%) in the negative trade balance on food;
  Increased investment in agricultural enterprises;
  Better trained and motivated agricultural extension service;
  Better coordination between relevant public and private sector agencies; 
  Better trained and managed rural and producer organizations;
  Sector policy and programme developed and implemented;
  Reduction in negative impacts on natural resources;
  Human resource base improved.
