PLANNING and STATISTICS UNIT
The Planning and Statistics Unit within the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries was established in 1982
functioning at three basic levels.
To gather data relevant to the Agriculture Sector To carry out economic analysis and
To coordinate the activities of the Ministry of Agriculture towards the common
goals of achieving Agricultural and National Development
In an effort to improve and strengthen the institutional capabilities of the Agricultural Planning Unit (as it was called in the early days of its establishment) there were two (2)
specific objectives outlined;
To improve methods of data collection, organization, analysis and dissemination for Agricultural Planning and To establish a system of annual programming and monitoring for activities and
projects in the Agricultural Sector.
As a result of this new Improvement in strengthening the Agricultural Planning Unit (APU),
three major areas were developed terms of Marketing and Trade, Sector Evaluation and Farm Management Programming, Monitoring and Evaluation. These new structures gave
rise to the realization of three distinct sub-units within the Agricultural Planning Unit namely, Marketing, Statistics and Planning respectively.
Subsequent to the period of reform and advancement the unit’s name was formally
changed to the now known Planning and Statistics Unit (PSU).
In general the role of the Planning and Statistics Unit is to provide a capable and
efficient framework for developing, evaluating, implementing, monitoring and coordinating policies, plans, programmes and activities in the Agricultural Sector.
